Spencer Shakespeare is a well known visual artist based in Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast.
Born in Whitechapel in London (‘When the Beatles were still together!’) he mentions, Spencer studied Natural History Illustration at Bournemouth College of Art and Design, following up with a degree in theology, and later worked as a missionary in India. Spencers career has taken a few twists and turns over the years, but painting has been a constant.
As a child, he remembers staying at his grandparent’s pub in Cambridgeshire when he was around seven years old, and drawing everything he saw.
One Christmas, Spencer received his first sketch pad and a box of artist pencils, as well as a book on drawing wildlife, from then on he knew he wanted to be an artist.
The Tallebudgera Artists work references nature which he so elegantly translates into his expressive paintings. Spencer explores relationships with the natural world through his own visual language. Earthy and vibrant tones sit side by side engaging with pops of beautiful colour, making for a real visual treat for any art lover.
Spencer has exhibited regularly since his first exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London in 1995, and this May/June, the Dust Temple will host his new body of work in his Solo Show called ‘Alchemy Faune’.
