The Pete Neville Jazz Experience
The Pete Neville Jazz Experience is an original jazz quintet that had it’s first gig some years back in Sydney introducing the Indie Rock audience of You Am I to great music inspired by jazz of the 60s. This new version of the band brings together a fine array of jazz improvisers from the Gold Coast area featuring Alfredo Lopes (Saxophones), Liam Butler (Bass), Martha Baartz (Saxophones/flute) and Dave Kemp (Vibraphone), playing music influenced by the 1960s work of artists such as Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and more.
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS
PETE NEVILLE
Pete is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz department and composition graduate from Australian Film Television and Radio School. Having made the move to South East Queensland, he is now bringing a new troupe of local musicians into the fold. As well as freelancing in the Sydney jazz scene, Pete composed and played percussion nationally with jazz-rockers Trout Fishing in Quebec, played with the Resin Dogs and has also performed with a host of artists including You Am I, and Jack Johnson.
Saxophonist Martha Baartz has an impressive musical history and is one of the rising female stars in the Australian Jazz scene. She has toured extensively in Europe and throughout Australia.
A co-writer and founding member with of the Baartz Freeman Sextet with Liam Freeman, Martha Baartz has an impressive musical history. She has studied saxophone in Australia with Tony Buchanan, Ian Chaplin and Jim Glasson and overseas in the USA with Dave Liebman, Kris Bauman and Lisa Parrott.
Highly regarded in Australian jazz, funk and blues circles, alto-saxophonist, composer and arranger Martha Baartz has shared the stage with legends including Renee Geyer, The Funk Brothers, The Temptations, and Martha and the Vandalas. She’s lived and worked in Melbourne and New York, and played extensively at Australia’s finest jazz venues
Alfredo Lopes has been performing and writing jazz repertoire since his Associate Diploma of Jazz Studies at Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 1993. In 2012 he completed an Honours exegesis at Southern Cross University, Lismore: The harmonic explorations of Joe Henderson: A study by a professional jazz musician on his contribution to the modern jazz tenor saxophone sound. He has written and presented various research papers including: Jazzing: Intuition and Intellect, at the Australasian Jazz and Improvisation Research Network conference, Melbourne, 2–4 June 2017; Jazz as process: A different perspective for the 21st century, at the Continental Drift: A Century of Jazz on Record conference, Edinburgh Napier University, 15th–16th July 2017; and Developing art as process: Exploring the spaces between the outcomes, presented at the 14th International Arts in Society conference, Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, Portugal, 19th–21st June 2019.
Alfredo is at Queensland Conservatorium of Music, working on a Doctorate of Musical Arts exegesis: Jazz as process: Developing artistic practice as a composer, player and leader in a small ensemble. He has studied arranging with Graeme Lyall, composition and harmony with Roger Frampton and piano and counterpoint with Judy Bailey. Alfredo has also studied with jazz great: Joe Henderson, saxophonist: Wes Anderson from the Lincoln Centre Orchestra and New York piano player/educator, Dr Barry Harris.
