SWELL Fringe – Sip & Sculpt

Sip on a glass of wine from the Dust Temple Bar whilst being guided through the process of sculpting your own sculpture by local ceramicist Jo Norton. During the masterclass, you will learn Kurinuki, a traditional Japanese form of hand-building.

Kurinuki is a traditional form of handbuilding in Japan. The word means ‘carving out’ and the process involves shaping a solid block of clay, then carving out a vessel to create ‘interior space’. It is a sculptural approach to making the interior of the piece just as important as the exterior. In the workshop, you will have the opportunity to make Yunomi (handless teacup) or two sake cups.

Tuition, inspiration, and simple tools are provided. Your work will be twice fired and be available for collection 4-6 weeks after the workshop.

About the Artist: Jo Norton Jo Norton is an artist who works primarily in clay.  She is a studio potter working in a converted warehouse not far from the ocean. Clay is a medium that allows her to create an idea through the use of colour, texture, and form. Her work is informed by time; natural and manmade. A new idea takes shape; the first piece inspires the next; several pieces become part of a series; variation initiate a new idea and the cycle begins.
